A. Tiberius Gracchus was a Roman senator who identified himself with the Populares Party, the common people. When he was Tribune,he proposed radical land reform, which included rich senators having their land confiscated and redistributed amongst the common people.Standing for re-election, when Tiberius appeared at the Senate on election day, a number of the senators of the Nobles Party, the Optimates, accused Tiberius of attempting to become king.In reality, they were so enraged with his proposals for land reform, they lost their tempers and beat him to death with chairs.
