Flying Bugs?
Q. I remember a flying bug that had lights in their behinds, or it seemed they did. They were flying bugs. I haven't seen them since I was a kid. The name that keeps coming to mind is Lightening bug or something like that. Is this a dream I had or were they for real? If they were real are they still around? What are they called? Where can I go to read about these?

A. They are still around, lightening bugs, or fire flies...they are actually a beetle, and are only out when it's warm, and I usually see them in tall grass, or cornfields...rarely out in the open. They have a separate organ under their abdomens that when they release a chemical to attract a mate, makes them light up intermittently, so when they're all out in the summer, it will look like a bunch of flickers of light out in a field. It's actually quite a nice sight!

What are these little bugs that are flying inside my house?
Q. We keep a clean house, but there are these little flying bugs that we can't seem to get rid of. They're not mosquitoes, much smaller than that, and they don't seem to bite. They remind me of the little bugs that you see around urinals and stuff, which really grosses me out. We've cleaned the house from top to bottom and I don't know what else we can do to get rid of them. They don't seem to be attracted to food or anything in particular, they just are irritating. I don't want to do any harsh pest control stuff if possible... we have a 9 month old and don't really want to expose her to that stuff if possible. Any suggestions, or do you have any idea what these things might be?

Red flying bugs with a distinctive black band on their back end?
Q. I live in Canada and for a couple of years now, we have been getting these Red flying bugs with a distinctive black band on their back end. This year they are worse than ever. They seem to like all plants, but especially my lilies. Does anyone know what they are and how to control them?
Asked by Ducky - Wed Jul 23 10:53:16 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Here in my part of the US, we call them blister beetles. They can be controlled by a number of chemical sprays that can be found at your local garden center or with beneficial nematodes if you want an environmentally friendly method.

Anyone know how to get rid of little beige colored flying bugs in your house?
Q. I figured they were moths so I bought all these moth-removal products but they don't do anything to help the situation. These bugs are tiny, like only slightly bigger than flies, but they're not black; they're like biege in color. They fly but they don't bite or buzz or anything. They are all over my room just flying around and I know there are some in the bathroom. They just DON'T ever go away! What do you think they are and how can I get rid of them? Thanks.

A. Spray the soil with a pyrethrin based product. The larvae grow in the dirt. A couple of applications in the course of a week or two should do it.

A. I am all too familiar with these little gnats! Here's the best way I've found to get rid of them: First, remove ALL food from your counters - put your tomatoes and fruit in a bowl in the microwave if you prefer not to refrigerate them, or in a closed pantry. Wipe all your counters and wipe out your sinks before you go to bed. These little guys will feed on the smallest dollop left on any surface for them, and they're breeding in your drainage pipes, so the first place they find to feed is right there in the sink! Pour about 1 c. of bleach into EACH drain (if you've got 2 kitchen sinks, pour 1c. of bleach in each of them). NOW, go do the same thing in the sinks and drains (shower and bath) of all of your bathrooms. One cup in each… [cont.]

How do I get rid of a swarm of little flying bugs in my house?
Q. They are all flying around one light on the ceiling and they are getting really annoying! I think one bug laid eggs or something because they weren't there earlier this evening.
Asked by Angela C. - Sat May 8 00:04:32 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I know those bugs! Sorry I don't know what kind they are. I try to vacuum them up while they're flying around, and it cuts down their numbers a little. Also, keep the ceiling light off all evening (they seem to show up around 10 or 11pm for some reason) and get a desk lamp or something like that because they seem to like ceiling lights better. The good news is that they only show up during the first couple of weeks of warm weather, and you'll forget all about 'em -until next year.

What are these bugs flying above my grass?
Q. We recently laid new turf - a mix of buffalo and kikuyu. Every morning there are large shiny black bugs flying in big circular sweeps over the grass - lots of them. The don't stop long enough to have a good look, but they seem about 4cm long and have pointy bottoms! Any idea what they are and whether they are a bad, neutral or good thing for the grass? If they are bad, what can I do to get rid of them?
Asked by thinking...thinking... - Wed Dec 26 21:49:42 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'd call the place you got the turf from and tell them it was/is infested. They should offer to remedy the situation --- at the very least, they should be able to tell you what they are. If that doesn't work, Lowe's and Home Depot have a catalog from Ortho that shows pictures and what chemical will kill pests. You could check there.

A. Sounds like a local problem to me. Have you checked with any of your neighbors? Folks who have been living in an area a long time can tell you if this is something that you might have a problem with from time to time or if it's more serious. And, don't forget to check your local newspaper and farm extension service.

When you are satisfied with your research, you may be In my case, I needed no investment of anything but the time to ID the pest, and locate the WD-40, and man Ill tell you it was like they burned rubber peeling out of the local hangout getting out. What are these tiny little flying green bugs called?
Q. I live in Ohio and there are these bugs that keep flying around my computer that are green and have wings and they fly, but they are smaller than an ant. When they rest, their wings seem to fold down at their sides instead of against their backs since they are so small. I see them all the time, but they are not gnats as far as I know. They don't seem to be harmful, but they are pesky. Any ideas? Photos would definitely help too!

A. There are two ways to attend to your problem: the immediate solution, and the long term one. The immediate solution: The two easiest are: 1. Unroll wide tape, and stick it near the light. Scotch Tape works fine. leave about a foot long hanging. They're gonna get stuck to it. Remove the tape in the morning, or else ants will crawl to those bugs next. 2. Use a Vacuum Cleaner and suck them all. Then Put the Tape afterwards. The next steps are: 1. Locate the source. Where do the bugs get in? if they can get in there from outside, close the entry point. If you can not close it, find the nearest source. If what I have experienced is the same as what you have, then it comes from an open Garbage bin, where drying leaves are placed. Either… [cont.]
