How do I get small flying bugs off my plants?
Q. I put my house plants outside to get a bit more light. when I brought them in there were tons of small flying bugs all over them. I put them back out so I didn't get too many flying things in the house. Its sposed to be 98 today and if they stay out they'll die, but I don't want to bring the bugs inside. How can I quickly rid my plants of the bugs?

How to get rid of these little flying bugs?
Q. I have indoor plants and I noticed that there's always these small little blacks bugs flying about. I don't see them on the leaves so maybe they are hiding in the soil? What are they and how do I get rid of them? They are here whether it's summer or winter.
Asked by mavis - Tue Jan 12 22:32:48 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They are gnats and they are laying eggs in the soil. Changing the soil will help. Or, 1 part rubbing alcohol and 5 parts water to make a spray and spraying the top soil will kill them. Or a layer of no salt sand on the soil will cut the gnats.. when they hatch or when the flying ones want in the soil. A dish of vinegar with a drop of dish soap will draw the flying ones and they will drown in it. They like moisture. Letting the soil dry in between watering will hurt the eggs and larvae. If they are flying around the sinks, they like to lay eggs in drains. Bleach, or vinegar and soda down the drains will kill the eggs.

A. Spray the soil with a pyrethrin based product. The larvae grow in the dirt. A couple of applications in the course of a week or two should do it.

A. I am all too familiar with these little gnats! Here's the best way I've found to get rid of them: First, remove ALL food from your counters - put your tomatoes and fruit in a bowl in the microwave if you prefer not to refrigerate them, or in a closed pantry. Wipe all your counters and wipe out your sinks before you go to bed. These little guys will feed on the smallest dollop left on any surface for them, and they're breeding in your drainage pipes, so the first place they find to feed is right there in the sink! Pour about 1 c. of bleach into EACH drain (if you've got 2 kitchen sinks, pour 1c. of bleach in each of them). NOW, go do the same thing in the sinks and drains (shower and bath) of all of your bathrooms. One cup in each… [cont.]

How do I get rid of flying house bugs? Anyone know how I can get rid of tiny bugs that flies around @ nite?
Q. I am very annoyed! I keep seeing little bugs flying around the house; especially under the ceiling fan at night. The seem to be coming from outside. All the windows have screens and the doors are closed. I wonder if they're coming from my husband's garden?

A. Check inside your house first before going outside to search for the little buggers. I had a similar years ago and found a house plant was full of the little flies. We had over watered the plant and all these bugs started appearing. Also, check your pantry/ kitchen cabinets for a long forgotten bag of potatoes, etc. Also happened to me Hope this helps, bugs suck!

What are these bugs flying above my grass?
Q. We recently laid new turf - a mix of buffalo and kikuyu. Every morning there are large shiny black bugs flying in big circular sweeps over the grass - lots of them. The don't stop long enough to have a good look, but they seem about 4cm long and have pointy bottoms! Any idea what they are and whether they are a bad, neutral or good thing for the grass? If they are bad, what can I do to get rid of them?

A. I'd call the place you got the turf from and tell them it was/is infested. They should offer to remedy the situation --- at the very least, they should be able to tell you what they are. If that doesn't work, Lowe's and Home Depot have a catalog from Ortho that shows pictures and what chemical will kill pests. You could check there.

Houseplant with tiny flying bugs. How do I get rid of them? I tried plant safe bug spray.....?
Q. I used a spray that is for killing bugs on roses and such. These little bugs crawl around in the dirt and fly around the plant. I think they are killing it. I have very little experience in taking care of houseplants. I think I may have also been overwatering it. The dirt looks like it might be moldy? Not sure how to describe. White to yellowish little balls on top.

A. What you've described are "Fungus Gnats". They require moist soil conditions to live and reproduce. To eliminate them is quite simple; 1) Treat/spray your soil with some Insecticidal Soap (can be found at most hardware/garden shops). This application will eliminate existing fungus gnat larvae in the soil. 2) Place about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of clean sand over the top of your potting mix. This will provide a physical barrier that will prevent further egg-laying by the adults into the moist soil. Any flying gnats (adults) will die eventually and the reproductive cycle will be destroyed by eliminating their habitat. Hope this information helps solves your problem. good luck! -Certified Professional Crop Consultant with over 30… [cont.]

Why are there flying bugs in my guinea pig's cage?
Q. A day ago I went to feed one of my four guinea pigs and noticed some black bugs flying around and in his cage. I cleaned the cage but the bugs are still there. I believe they could be fruit flies, because my pigs eat alot of veggies/fruits. Is there a way to get rid of the bugs? Or will they just die out on their own as I continue to clean the cage?
Asked by Rebecca - Thu Aug 14 12:46:48 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes there is a way to get rid of fruit flies.Take a decent sized bowl fill it up half way with water. Then add vinegar to the water. Finally put some dish soap in the bowl and mix it up so its bubbly. The fruit flies will get attracted to the vinegar in the bowl and fly down to taste it and get stuck in the bubbles. Hope this helps! :)

A. Almost all bugs are attracted to light, so there's a huge variety of pissibilities as to what the bug could be. From your description, it sounds like a fly or maybe a moth.

What are these tiny little flying green bugs called?
Q. I live in Ohio and there are these bugs that keep flying around my computer that are green and have wings and they fly, but they are smaller than an ant. When they rest, their wings seem to fold down at their sides instead of against their backs since they are so small. I see them all the time, but they are not gnats as far as I know. They don't seem to be harmful, but they are pesky. Any ideas? Photos would definitely help too!

How do you get rid of the little flying bugs that accompany houseplants?
Q. I think that they are using the water as a breeding ground
Asked by confused - Tue Nov 27 10:48:56 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First of all make sure you don't leave water standing in the plants drain pans. It can cause root rot on your plants. Then to help control the bugs spray the plants with a mixture of regular dish soap and water. Just about a teaspoon in a spray bottle of water. This will help get rid of the bugs without using harsh pesticides.

A. I personally use a little dawn dishwashing liquid ( about a tablespoon ) and a little bleach , same amount , to a half gallon of water and spray the plant with it . The dishwashing liquid will kill the insects and the bleach kills fungus . Spray plants periodically to prevent further infestations . Start with every week and then every other week .

Is there a phobia of flying bugs such as bees and wasps?
Q. I am honestly terrified of anything that buzzes by me and is there any way to cure it?
Asked by Jenny - Fri Aug 17 16:11:31 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, there is, many people are afraid of flying bugs and often they're also afraid of ones that bite. One idea is to learn more about them, that way you will be more informed and may not feel as afraid. We are usually more afraid of the unknown. Also, you might consider seeing a therapist or phobia counselor just to talk to about it. This does not mean you are crazy, it actually means you're smart to ask for help. Best wishes to you.
