A. You never said what kind of bugs, but if they are the kind that crawl (ants, roaches, etc) you can sprinkle Borax along the walls and in the corners. You can but it at any hardware store or walmart.

A. Doesn't matter what you call them. They will be there no matter what you do. I have some hard shelled black, flying, biting, bugs in my pool. They are great swimmers & divers. Bite really hurts. Just scoop out the bug & squash it!

How do bugs get on houseplants in the first place?
Q. One of my indoor plants have bugs in it, how do they get there to begin with? There are no other plants nearby, and are far from the ground and at least 20 ft away from a door. (at work) Another indoor plant (at home) has a different type of bug in it, near plenty of other plants, but the other plants don't have bugs. This one is near a window, but the window is screened. Thanks!

How do I stop bugs from getting through my window screens?
Q. I've duct tapes all around my window. I don't think there is any way th bugs are coming through any cracks or anything. I saw one come right through the screen the other day. These bugs come through around evening time. They seem to be attracted to light. They are little tiny bugs that fly. They are really annoying. Does anyone else have this happen?

A. Most aluminum screen frames are somewhat tweaked on the outside. I have the same problem, so instead of trying to re-bend etc. and getting them back in right - on the back of the house where out of view and simple put a strip of duck-tape on all four sides. Make sure you tape the frame that is part of the window to the screen - tight. Hope this may help. OK I just read your entire question - Get new sceens - my bag!!!

How can I prevent bed bugs from spreading to my new apartment?
Q. I moved into an apartment, and they didn't tell me but they have bed bugs. I've been getting bit every night so i'm planning on moving out. I just want to make sure no bed bugs follow me to the new apartment and lay eggs. Any tips on what i can do or how i can make sure any bed bugs don't move with me?
Asked by Sun sun - Wed Feb 3 18:59:23 2010 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Since bed bugs hide in small crevices, they can travel with luggage, furniture, clothing, boxes, ect. This is how they move between hotels, homes and apartments. Used furniture, particularly bed frames and mattresses, are of greatest risk of harboring bed bugs and their eggs. They may be present in vacant apartments hiding in cracks and crevices since they may survive months without a blood meal. Bed bugs may travel between nearby apartments through voids in walls and holes though which wires and pipes pass. In a few cases, bats and/or birds may introduce and maintain bed bugs and their close relatives (bat bugs and bird bugs). All nests that harbor birds and bats should be removed. What is an effective way to deter bugs without killing them?
Q. The apartment complex has doorway lights on all night so bugs are attracted by the hundreds. I don't want to use any kind of poison but every time I open the door to walk the dog some bugs come in. Everyday there are these little black bugs by my front door. They stay pretty much right there by the door but they DO fly so I have had them throughout the rest of the place too. I'm looking for old home remedies or something I can do to get rid of these bugs... no poison please! Thanks in advance for your answers

What type of bugs do rainbow lorikeets eat?
Q. I've read on many websites that rainbow lorikeets eat bugs among other things. Does anyone know what type of bugs they eat? Also, would they even eat them if they've been hand reared? We've had our little boy before he had feathers and he's now 8 months old so I don't think he would adapt to eating something alive now?
Asked by Smitten - Sun Aug 9 08:00:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Rainbow lorikeets enjoy eating pollen, nectar, and fruit (apples, berries, and pears are their favorites). They also eat some fruit flavored pellets. They can eat small bugs and grubs, but they don't need to eat bugs in order to be healthy. I went to The National Aviary in Pittsburgh in May and fed some rainbow lorikeets and asked questions about them. The employee responsible for taking care of the lorikeets at the National Aviary told me that is what they feed the lorikeets.

A. Without actually seeing them I can only guess at their identity. The first thing that comes to mind is that they may be boxelder bugs. These insects basically are harmless, but can become nuisances when they enter dwellings in search of overwintering shelter. Have a look at the information at which includes photos of adult and immature boxelder bugs. Hope I helped.

What kind of little bugs live on faux wood blinds?
Q. I received a large quantity of surplus faux wood blinds, most of them packed in styrofoam, plastic, and cardboard. They have these tiny little reddish-brown crawling bugs all over them - lots of them. They have survived rain and are continuing to thrive, weeks later. I don't think they fly. My friend says she saw them leaping, up to a foot or more in the air, though I have not observed this. What are they and should I just spray them with bug spray? Will the spray damage the blinds?

A. It sounds like collembola. Collembola are an order of insect that are harmless to people and there things. I wouldn't bother spraying. They won't damage anything. I would just take the blinds outside and wipe them with a damp cloth.

Asked by RAE in N.Y. - Sun Jun 7 02:42:18 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your little red bugs could be mites. Mites are tricky because you could use a miticide but that would also kill the predator mites which control the 'bad' mites. If you have other bugs such as aphids, those can usually be controlled with a spray of water under the leaves for a few days. They can't come back once the hit the ground. You can get rid of snails and slugs by the barrier method, copper tape or tubing around the plants. (they can't cross it) Trapping by putting out a board or other object that they can crawl under and picking them in the morning .Or using a iron phosphate product such a Sluggo. The iron phosphate baits aren't dangerous to wild life or kids and they can actually improve your soil. (by adding iron) Stay away from… [cont.]

How do you get rid of spiders and other common bugs found in basements?
Q. So I just moved into my first home and forgot from my parent's home how many bugs are in the basement. I am finding spiders of course and other bugs. So my questions is how do you get rid of these bugs on your own? It is not a big problem where I have to get a bug exterminator involved, so if you have any home remedies I would appreciate it. My Mom says pour baking soda down along the baseboards but I have 2 cats and a small dog and this can get messy. So please give any ideas that would be helpful. Thank you so much and have a great day.

A. One side of my basement is my woodworking shop, the other my wife's quilt making shop, we also have storage places. We clean all the time. I have cleaned once real good and spray painted all the rafters white, it gives of better light and it looks cleaner. We're always cleaning with a fifteen gallon type garage vac, it woks well for the type of junk we have but, we always spray with "Raid" in and around the washer, the sink, places where it's damp or, dark.

Where do June Bugs come from and where do they go during the day?
Q. Have you ever noticed that June Bugs seem to either die or play dead the next day after you have been swarmed by them? I don't understand where they come from and why are light bulbs the only thing that attracts them. If they get in your home and you don't find them till the next day, they seem to be either dead or they are playing dead very well.
Asked by Donnamite - Sat Apr 7 23:56:07 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is usually a one year cycle. When the beetles emerge from the soil in the spring, the female burrows into the ground to lay next years eggs. The eggs go through three stages in the soil, finally emerging as adults in the spring. They emerge when the outside temperature and light is just right and usually emerge at night. Depending on the specie of beetle, they are only emerging in one area for one to three weeks (give or take a week) and eat and mate, lay eggs, and then die. This is why it appears as though they only live one day. See the URLs provided below for more information. And, like most bugs, they are attracted to light bulbs.
