How do I keep bugs out of my apartment?
Q. I recently moved into a garden level apartment and the bugs are driving me crazy! I have earwigs, spiders, centipedes, some sort of tiny flying bug and, as of last night, crickets. I've tried spraying Raid around the windows and in the nooks and crannies and around the floorboards inside my apartment. I've even sprayed around my windows from the outside. I feel like every time I open my windows, it's a big invitation for them to come inside. It's a beautiful day today and I'm sitting here with my windows closed and the A/C on because I don't want more bugs coming in. My apartment manager has said she would call an exterminator, but that's only going to kill what's already inside. What do I do about the bugs outside that all seem to… [cont.]

A. Ortho home defence, it cost $10 a any home improvement store. You spray it along the interior and exterior (inside and outside) walls. It kills all the bugs you have and keeps them from coming back, for up to 3 months...

A. I used soapy water in a spray bottle (dishsoap) and sprayed the leaves on my night blooming jasmine tree for Aphids and it worked great and made it clean at the same time. I would give this a try!

Small round bugs around doors and windows, what kind and how to get rid of?
Q. I don't know what these bugs are but they are brownish-orange, about 1 cm small, round, and crawl all over the place. I found a bunch by the window and sliding glass door. They stick to the walls, curtains, and ceiling. Any idea what kind of bugs they are, where they are coming from, or how to kill them all?

A. Sounds to me like you may be a target for hibernation by the Multi colored Asian Lady Bird Beetle, Harmonia axyridis. malb have extreme varieties of spots, coloring, etc. The best way to identify them is to look at their pronotum (what appears to be their head) and see if there are black markings that form a "W" or "M" depending on how you are looking at them. If you see that, then you have MALB. Check out the link above. They can be a HUGE nuisance. If you do not have MALB, then you are going to have to be more specific in your description before I could identify it for you.

What is an effective way to deter bugs without killing them?
Q. The apartment complex has doorway lights on all night so bugs are attracted by the hundreds. I don't want to use any kind of poison but every time I open the door to walk the dog some bugs come in. Everyday there are these little black bugs by my front door. They stay pretty much right there by the door but they DO fly so I have had them throughout the rest of the place too. I'm looking for old home remedies or something I can do to get rid of these bugs... no poison please! Thanks in advance for your answers

How do I get rid of bugs in my bedroom?
Q. Our house had an attached garage that was turned into a bedroom, and my husband and I LOVE it cause it's huge! But, we find that there are a lot of "garage type" bugs like ants, spiders and rolly pollys in the room. I have been using raid but it hasn't helped much. I have an EXTREME fear of bugs! So I'm wondering, what is an effective way to keep the bugs out? Thanks in advance.

A. Since You converted it, the bugs were probably already there, You just never saw them (they like to hide usually). Use a "bug bomb" 1st, then spray or use "broadcast granuals" around the outside of the 'garage'.

What type of bugs do rainbow lorikeets eat?
Q. I've read on many websites that rainbow lorikeets eat bugs among other things. Does anyone know what type of bugs they eat? Also, would they even eat them if they've been hand reared? We've had our little boy before he had feathers and he's now 8 months old so I don't think he would adapt to eating something alive now?
Asked by Smitten - Sun Aug 9 08:00:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Rainbow lorikeets enjoy eating pollen, nectar, and fruit (apples, berries, and pears are their favorites). They also eat some fruit flavored pellets. They can eat small bugs and grubs, but they don't need to eat bugs in order to be healthy. I went to The National Aviary in Pittsburgh in May and fed some rainbow lorikeets and asked questions about them. The employee responsible for taking care of the lorikeets at the National Aviary told me that is what they feed the lorikeets.

How did the pioneers get the bugs out of their flour?
Q. They used to take a lot of flour with them on their trips across the country and I'm sure it got bugs in it. Did they just use it like that, bugs and all? Now days it is very upsetting to get bugs in the flour and when I remember, I freeze it a few days to kill the eggs or whatever it is in there.

A. I doubt they worried about the bugs too much. They were hungry and had no choice since they didn't have any supermarkets. I think people nowadays are just too spoiled and wasteful.

What are these bugs in my bedroom, and how do I get rid of them?
Q. In my bedroom there are little worm-like things spread around certain areas of carpet. I don't know what they are, they may be larvae of some sort. I have sprayed where they appear (often there are several underneath something) a few times with bug spray, but the bugs eventually return. I'm not sure how to describe them. They are anywhere from minuscule to a centimeter long, they appear white or a little orangey with dark circles around them. They either don't have any legs, or their legs are very very small. The don't move very often when I'm looking at them (shining a bright flashlight), but I will find that they have moved since the last time I saw them. Q. I've found bugs in my couscous and had to toss it out. I kept the couscous in the cardboard box package it came in. Should I store all my grain and flour in glass containers now? Or is there a way to repel bugs from your grain? Maybe add a dried orange peel or a cinnamon stick? Something?

A. We keep our grains in closed containers (for those we buy in bulk) or put the box they came in into a plastic sip-top bag before putting it in the cabinet.

What are these tiny gray bugs in my house?
Q. My kitchen and tile floor are suddenly infested with many TINY gray bugs. I have looked at pictures of fleas, termites, etc. and I can't figure out what they are. They are so small I can't count how many legs they have. They seem to be oval shaped, in a single body segment, and crawl (no hopping, jumping, etc.) They are not spiders, ants, or anything common that I have ever seen before. A. It sounds like you have springtails. I have had problems with them in the past as well. But the good news is they are basically harmless (but very annoying). They are drawn to moisture, so if you can keep the moisture levels down in the problem areas, that will help the most in the long run. I have included a link for more information on the topic.

Asked by heretoday - Sat Jul 10 08:47:24 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. For every plant growing, there is an insect predator that can eat it. In most cases, there are many predators that will eat the plant. That means most organic home remedies using other plants like hot sauce attract the insects that eat peppers, such as bean Beatles and white flys and thrips. The shiny dried slime is indicative of snails / slug crawling across the leaf and eating it. If it is a snail, look for a large part of the leaf to be eaten away. If it is a big leaf, the snail will leave the veins and eat the tender part of the leaf. To get rid of the snail / slug spray with dish soap / water mixed at a consistency of a couple of Tablespoons per spray bottle full of water. It won't kill the snail, but make him move on to some other… [cont.]

A. If they bite around the waist and sock area they may be fleas. Summer is flea season. Or they may be bed bugs. Try a fumigant. Turn off the AC, close the windows, fumiage. leave for a while, Then come back and open the windows and area out the area. Maybe that will help.
